Access and Inclusion Statement

Yarraville Farmers Market is for everyone. We want every visitor to feel welcome, and to be able to plan their morning with confidence, whatever their access needs. This statement sets out, as honestly and clearly as we can, what to expect at the market and how we can help. We would always rather you asked us a question than stayed home unsure.

Who we're here for

We aim to welcome people of all ages and abilities, including people who:

  • use a wheelchair, mobility scooter, walking frame or other mobility aid
  • have low vision or are blind
  • are Deaf or hard of hearing
  • are autistic or have sensory processing needs
  • have a cognitive disability, or find busy places tiring
  • live with allergies or food intolerances
  • are recovering from a temporary injury
  • are older, or are visiting with young children and prams
  • are visiting as a multi-generational family or group

Carers, support workers and companions are always welcome alongside you.

Getting here and moving around

The market is held outdoors at Bassett Reserve, Geelong Road, West Footscray, on the fourth Sunday of every month from 8am to 1pm. Entry is free and no ticket is needed.

  • The site. Bassett Reserve is an open public park. Stalls sit on open ground and pathways, and the surface is firm but naturally uneven in places, as you would expect in a park. After wet weather, grassed areas can be soft.
  • Aisles and layout. We plan the market with wide, level thoroughfares so that wheelchairs, mobility scooters and prams can move through comfortably. The layout is simple and open.
  • Parking and drop-off. There is free street parking on the roads around the reserve. For an accessible drop-off close to the market, the Geelong Road bus stop at Bassett Reserve can be used as a set-down point.
  • Toilets. There is no toilet on the reserve itself. The nearest accessible toilet is at Hungry Jack's, Kingsville, a short distance across Geelong Road.
  • Somewhere to rest. There is open lawn to sit on, and you are very welcome to bring a folding chair.
  • Quiet times. The market is in the open air, which many people find calmer than an enclosed hall. We hold two music-free quiet periods, from 8am to 9am and from 12pm to 1pm. Please note that some stallholders run their own generators, so you may still hear those.

By access need

Limited mobility, wheelchairs and scooters

We keep aisles wide and level. The ground is park terrain and can be uneven or soft in places. Tell us what you need and we will help you plan the easiest route and drop-off.

Low vision or blindness

Guide dogs and other assistance animals are welcome throughout the market. Our team wear high-visibility vests and are happy to guide you, describe what is on offer, or read a stallholder's signage and prices aloud. We can send you a description of the layout before you visit.

Deaf or hard of hearing

Our stallholders and team are happy to communicate in writing, including by typing on a phone. The open-air setting, and our music-free quiet periods, can make conversation easier.

Sensory processing and autism

We hold two music-free quiet periods, from 8am to 9am and from 12pm to 1pm, which are the calmest times to visit. Live music may play between those times. Some stallholders run their own generators, so there can be background noise from those even during the quiet periods. We can share the site layout in advance, so there are no surprises.

Cognitive disability

The layout is simple and the signage is clear. Our team in high-visibility vests are there to help at any time, and you can take all the time you need.

Allergies, intolerances and dietary needs

Many of our producers cater for gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and vegan needs, and they are the best people to ask about ingredients and how food is prepared. As a single-use plastic free market, we warmly welcome you to bring your own containers, cup and bags.

Assistance animals, carers and companions

  • Assistance animals are welcome throughout the market.
  • Entry is free for everyone, so a carer, support worker or companion is always welcome at no cost. A Companion Card is not needed, as the market is free to attend.
  • Our team are briefed to offer help respectfully, and to take their lead from you.

Our website and this statement

We have built our website to meet the WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standard as a baseline. That includes clear page structure, keyboard navigation, visible focus indicators, readable text contrast, labelled forms and descriptive image text. This statement is published here as a web page. If you would prefer it in large print or another format, contact us and we will provide one.
